Atami (熱海) literally means “hot ocean” because this onsen town is very unique. It’s located right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, so you can enjoy both the onsen hot springs and the beaches. Traditionally, Atami used to a be small fishing town, so there are still famous seafood restaurants that dot its coasts.
Mase has been making snacks in Atami since 1872, and this delicately baked manju was one of the first snacks they ever made. It’s still made the same exact way as nearly 150 years ago.
