The Muromachi period of Japan (14-15th century) was when tea culture was popularized in Japan. And with the advent of tea ceremonies, confectionaries that would be eaten alongside the tea began to increase in popularity. Maedaseika, was founded in 1924 to keep this tradition alive and the shop is now one of the most influential snack stores in all of Kyoto.
